Last week’s surprise guest speaker was very interesting. A great presentation Pat Callaghan!
To see all those photos including those of the team you enjoyed the time with; and to learn of some of the geography of the Kokoda track, the wartime history of the area, was amazing. So too, were the details you gave of the Japanese invasion of PNG from the northern beaches and across the Owen Stanley Ranges to the South!
How those very young Aussie boys provided the ruthless defence of PNG and Australia, managing to ambush the ‘fearless’ Japanese soldiers, push them back and give some of the ‘same’ in return!
What an adventure you had over 10 days and then to fly out of Kokoda on a plane that tragically met its end along with its occupants, just a few weeks later! Did you buy a lottery ticket?
This week we have a visit and BBQ tea with our partners to Axel Stenross Maritime Museum.
As always, it is fascinating to visit because their volunteer crew are continuously striving to improve the museum, its facilities and all the exhibits, for the ever increasing numbers of visitors.
I believe that the well known “Eric O’Connor Collection” of local historical mementos and photographs is about to be exhibited there later this year. Don’t miss seeing that, it’s outstanding!
Combined Service Clubs’ Dinner at Ravendale on Tuesday 27 April at $30 pp
Please make sure you have put a note in your diary and have marked your attendance on the attendance sheet being circulated for the last time tonight. Dinner is not only for service club members but yourselves, your partners, and any guests if you would like to invite some, to help us raise funds for the ShelterBox Project.
We will have several raffles running at the dinner, and we may have the opportunity to offer a few items for auction too!
A big thankyou to those Rotarians who volunteered to help on the ‘ShelterBox’ tent display and BBQ opposite the Post Office 9 am til 3 pm on both Friday 23 and Saturday 24 April.
We look forward to your participation and a very successful fundraiser.
Also to those who nominated to help with the two additional BBQs in the same week, for the “Be Active Corporate Challenge” at Makybe Diva, 11.30 am ‘til 2 pm on Thursday 22 April and for Kate Nichols’ ‘morning after the wedding’ BBQ at Boston Bay Winery’ 11.30 am ‘til 1.00 pm on Anzac Day Sunday 25 April.
The real essence of this Rotary Club is its fellowship and volunteering spirit. Thank you all so much.
If there are any more helpers who can spare some time, they would be gratefully received.
Please see me at our meeting tonight to note your offer.
