What a talented young lady we had as our guest speaker last week!
Her compelling presentation about the strategic role she had in the drilling team of a North Sea oil rig! Kelly Taylor showed us just what her forthright personality did for her, in challenging an almost entirely male-dominated work environment. This was to say nothing of the benefits of her early education at Cummins Area School and the fixing of the good nature and work ethics of her parents, and particularly the engineering background which obviously stemmed from her father.
She has all our best wishes for her new business venture at her new laboratory at Wangary.
As Malcolm graced us with his attendance last week, even after chasing is ‘billy’ cart around the Nyroca environs, it was an ideal time to make a surprise presentation to him and ‘Aunty’ Roslyn in appreciation of their time and resources provided to D9500 Rotary Youth Exchange, in hosting the students (and their minders) at Nyroca Scout Camp March 8 to 11 for their annual surfing weekend.
Unfortunately at this late hour, we have not been able to secure Robin Mathews of Maralinga, as our guest speaker this week, but Pat Callaghan has kindly offered to ‘step up to the plate’ with what should be an intriguing talk on his 9 day trip on the Kokoda Track in June last year. Thanks Pat.
Our Annual Break-up Meeting will be at Nyroca from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 June for our usual camping weekend, and end of year lunch on the Sunday. This will be in lieu of our Tuesday meeting on the 29 June which has been consequently cancelled.
Please make sure you put a note in your diary for the Combined Service Clubs Dinner at Ravendale on Tuesday 27 April at $30 pp; Mark your attendance for the Dinner for yourselves, your partners, and guests if you would like to invite some, on the attendance sheet being circulated.
Our Club has committed to do some fundraising for the ‘Shelterbox Project’ via this Combined Dinner.
We will have several raffles running at the dinner, and judging by the sponsorship gained for prizes to date, we may have the opportunity to offer a few items for auction as well!
As well as the dinner we are organising a public display of the sample ‘shelterbox’ tent etc opposite the Post Office on both Friday 23 and Saturday 24 April, with an ‘attractive’ BBQ, some tin-rattling and a small raffle drawn each day for the public. To run this display from approx 9-3 each day we will need some Rotary volunteers to help erect, man the site, and dismantle the display each day. Refer roster.
The BBQ Trailer will be running hot that week….
We have agreed to 2 requests for our BBQ Trailer; One community activity, one private show.
First; From Mark Fisher, the “BE-Active” Field Officer at the PLCC, to supply our BBQ and (3) cooks to cook supplied food from 11.30 am ‘til 2 pm on Thursday 22 April adjacent to the Stage area and Makybe Diva’s Statue on the foreshore, for a Corporate Challenge Activity, organised for the local businesses, whilst the National Women’s U18 Hockey Carnival is on at Ravendale Sports Complex.
Second; From Ms Kate Nichols, a local girl, to supply our BBQ and (3) cooks for an agreed charge, to cook supplied food for the occasion of her “post-wedding • morning after the night before” show, at the Boston Bay Winery from 11.30 am ‘til 1.00pm on Anzac Day Sunday 25 April.
It would be great to have some volunteers for these events as well ……… If you can’t do one you may be able to help on an alternative one ………. Please see me at Rotary dinner meeting to note your offer.
