Our dinner meeting last week certainly was a treat, with about 80 present including wives and partners, two visiting Rotarians, guests of Rotarians including a couple who will be new members sooner than later!

On top of all that, we were treated to a confident and snappy presentation from Melina Benson about her year on exchange in Assens, Denmark.

Keeping her company was Victoria Barker and her family. Although Victoria was sponsored by Kangaroo Island Rotary Club, she has offered to give us her presentation about her Exchange in Germany after she has settled back into school.

Both the young ladies have come back home with a good measure of maturity and confidence gained from their experiences Incidentally, the Barker Family will be Pablo’s last host family for his exchange.

Greg Honeychurch (aka Chunnyhurch) gave us his report on the Tunarama Tuna Stall. All the efforts made by everyone have raised some $4,800 for the Club. He also mentioned some of the stalwarts who gave him a lot of organisational support, no questions asked! A great job well done!

On Friday I had the opportunity to visit the Happy Crabbers up at Cowell for an evening of eating crabs and fun, and lots of talk, eating more crabs and downing a few red cordials. (about 37 people in all, including Pablo)

It certainly was a good experience for me to see the camaraderie between the members, wives and partners all enjoying themselves in such a great atmosphere.

I will definitely be one of the Happy Campers, next time around.

On Friday evening their total catch was more than 600 crabs for the 1½ days!

We must have eaten at least 160 amongst us for tea.

This week we have all of our committees meeting.

We need to consider David Forbes proposed film night at ‘Youthoria’ Theatre, which we need to use for fund raising to “End Polio Now”, the number one priority of Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation and D9500. It happens to be Rotary’s 105 birthday on the date we will be showing –

February 23, maybe starting about 7.00pm, and it will have to be in lieu of our dinner meeting that night. We need a minimum of 70 attendees before we make any money, so we’ll need a brief but well organised advertising campaign. The theatre holds about 300 and it would be nice to have at least 200-250 there.  We are open to suggestions for non-Rotarian targets for the advertising.

The Film is Bran Nue Dae’ based on the aboriginal stage play of the same name in 1989.

To give you an idea, the story line is as follows;

“It's the summer of 1969 and young WILLIE is filled with the life of the idyllic old pearling port Broome, in the North of Western Australia - fishing, hanging out with his mates, and when he can, his girl ROSIE. However his mother THERESA has great hopes for him and she returns him to the religious mission in Perth for further schooling. After being punished by FATHER BENEDICTUS for an act of youthful rebellion, Willie runs away from the mission. But to where... he's too ashamed to go home, it will break his mother's heart.

Down on his luck he meets an old fella, who he calls 'Uncle' TADPOLE, and together they con a couple of hippies, ANNIE and SLIPPERY, into taking them on the 2,500 km journey through spectacular landscape back to Broome. Willie learns the hard and funny lessons he needs to get home, all the while pursued by Father Benedictus.”

A message from Mexico

Hi all,
This is a little taste of life on the road. It really is a whole lot of fun if you don't take it too seriously.
We are currently sitting in a marina just out of Belize City just a meter from the Carribean Sea and a great sea breeze to take the heat away.

A note from Emile's Host Family

Dear Odette,

Greetings from a very snowy and cold Sweden!

We are very happy to be Emile’s host family. He is a very polite, nice and helpful boy with a positive view on things.

We picked him up last Saturday in Stockholm at 6am. We went to the hotel close to the airport together.

Emile called you at that time, I hope You appreciated that.

After breakfast at the hotel we drove back to Söderköping, a drive of about 2,5 hours. Emile was really tired and fell asleep in the car.

When we got back home, we showed Emile our home and we spoke about the Rotary rules.

On the Sunday we took a walk in Söderköping to make sure he will find his way to school.

This winter we have a lot of snow so Emile was walking around in the snow. I think he thought it was fun but cold!

During the walk, he thought it was cold to we went shopping for new clothes for him. Emile bought new pants, a sweater and warm shoes.

Monday was Emile’s first day in school. I followed him there and he picked his classes for his academic year. The school’s name is Nyströmska Skolan  and is situated here in Söderköping.

After that I showed a bit more of Söderköping, including the gym. Later that evening, Emile went to the gym with our oldest son, Jonas. He seemed to like the gym.

Emile went to school on his own on Tuesday, it’s 5-8 minute walk from our home.

In the evening he joined me for a basket ball game in Norrköping, I hope he liked it.

Wednesday was school again for Emile and he spent the evening with friends from school. It seems as if Emile already found good friends in school.

We have Rotary meetings on Thursday mornings, so Emile joined me there on Thursday. The meeting is in Swedish but he has already learned a few words.

This Saturday evening Emile went to Norrköping with his contact person, Per.  The exchange students in the area are meeting to play curling. It’s played inside but on ice. I hope he enjoyed it.

In the day I took him to get some more shopping done, he needed a pair of jeans. My daughter also joined us and Emile had a “vacuum cleaner” with his coffee (it’s a certain type of pastry).

On Sunday the other two host families visited us. Also his contact person and his wife were here. He got to meet his future host parents and his future host siblings.

This week, Emile will be away from Monday to Friday. He will attend Swedish lessons with other exchange students.

When he comes back to us, we have agreed we will speak Swedish at home.

Thank you so much for the post card you sent! We really appreciate you wanted to share that with us.

We really enjoy having Emile with us and we hope he feels the same way.

As you know, we do not have any children living at home right now, except for Emile. The positive side of that is that we do get more time for Emile.

I hope you are doing well in the hot weather (something we miss here!).

Best regards,

Björn Landström

 Getting Married When Older

Jacob (age 92) and Rebecca (age 89) are all excited about their decision to get married.

They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass the local chemist's shop.

Jacob suggests they go in.
Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?"
The pharmacist answers "Yes Sir."
Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?"
Pharmacist: "Of course we do."
Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?"
Pharmacist: "All kinds "
Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?"
Pharmacist: "Definitely."
Jacob: "How about suppositories?"
Pharmacist: "Not much demand for them, but we stock them!"
Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, and Alzheimer's?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works."
Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?"
Pharmacist: "Absolutely....."
Jacob:"Everything for heartburn and indigestion?"
Pharmacist: "Certainly Sir."
Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?"
Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes."
Jacob: "How about adult incontinence pants?"
Pharmacist: "One of our best selling lines."
Jacob: "Then we'd like to use this store for our wedding
gift registery......."

Difficult decision

A man watching a football game on TV kept switching channels
To a dirty movie featuring a very lusty couple making love.
"I don't know whether to watch them or the game," he said to his wife.
"For heaven's sake, watch them," his wife advised.

. . .  "You already know how to play football!"

The four way test
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Invocation:

For food, faith and fellowship and every opportunity of service we give you thanks O’Lord.
