HAVE FUN IN ROTARY   HELP A MATE

  Col's Carry-on

Pride of Workmanship Awards Night last Tuesday was a

memorable night for our twelve recipients of awards.

I understand that both Employers and Employees

appreciate the efforts and intention of the program. Once

again I would like to thank Chairman David and his team

for a job well done.

This week we have a DVD presentation from ‘The Runaway Brides’ as a follow up to there successful fundraising effort in the Variety Bash.

Tonight we will be inducting new member Hamish Mould, and we will also have in attendance Daniel Schubert, a transferee to our Club. Please make them both feel welcome. Daniel, from Adelaide Club, has visited us a couple of times before.

Next week is a Public Holiday, hence NO MEETING 26th April.

The following Tuesday we look forward to hearing new member Wayne Gale tell us his story. Wayne, you can’t talk too long as we have to go to Committee meetings afterwards.

Dianne and I hope that you all have a most enjoyable and relaxing Easter break with family and friends. Travel safely !!!

Colin

Position Vacant

Looking for a short term replacement Attendance Officer.

This temporary position has become available due to the existing Officer being burnt out and in desperate need of R & R.   The position attracts the usual remuneration and benefits and requires absolutely no special abilities. You will need to have your own tools of trade for the position which is a crystal ball and a computer or just a pencil would be adequate.   The existing officer is willing to provide the necessary forms for the rest of the year and so that leaves the big job of making sure that at each meeting you are there before the others which allows you extra time away from your wife and an extra beer with a few of the early Rotarians.   You will have assistance at the Attendance Officers office at SafeStore where Morag will produce the end of year report under supervision of the President.   If this is YOU then please see me at your earliest convenience for immediate training.

JUST A THOUGHT  —

The optimist goes to the window and says, ‘Good morning, God.’ The pessimist goes to the window and says, ‘Good God, morning.’

HELP A MATE -

Remember Neighbourhood Watch ? Long Easter break coming up, and if you’re not going away keep a closer lookout around your neighbourhood. There may be unwanted ‘visitors’ on the wander.

highlights from an Email sent to Chris Stone from past Port Lincoln Rotarian Chris Semmens

We had a fantastic 20 months in Hamburg, the job was a bit ordinary but I learnt lots and the lifestyle was great.  Apart from the winters Hamburg is an extremely livable city.  We were in St Georg, 5 minutes walk from the Hauptbanhof (main railway station) and took to cycling again.  I had a car but from March until Nov biked to work, about 10km each way.  On the weekends Joanne and I would normally cycle around the Alster  or up to one of the parks.  Found out not to ride after one too many, you still fall off and the footpath is very hard. My trip to work took me through the old Elbe Tunnel, completed in the early 1900's.  One of the highlights was our last winter down to minus 16, the Elbe froze over and we were able to walk over the Ausen Alster, the big lake, only happens once every 10 years or so.  Great to be in the middle drinking mulled wine or a beer.  Our favorite department store was the Alster Haus, the food court on the top floor was spectacular, wine and cheese was our favourite.

We found Hamburg to be extremely safe and the police looked after 95% of the population and went in extremely hard to any group who disturbed general life without having to be politically correct.  Of course there were some areas where there were drugs and low life but was in the main few and far between.        We did quite a bit of traveling while there, long weekends in Stockholm and Christmas in Copenhagen and Easter in Amsterdam (1st year) and Prague (2nd year).  Northern Germany in Summer is great but even with 25 degs still too cold to swim (for us anyway).   The project at Blohm & Voss concluded in July 2010 and I was offered the position of Technical Manager for Fraser Yachts, we moved to Monaco and live in an apartment in the Principality.  While Monaco is not perfect we are 20 minutes by train from Nice in the South of France and Ventimigllia in Italy.  I spend more time on the road than I do in the office and travel regularly to Germany, France, Italy and Holland.  Have had 2 work trips to NZ and one to Melbourne, so life is all go.    We still love Australia and intend to settle back in the next year or so, so hope to give a talk at Rotary some time in the future.  I guess the properties at Coffins have not flattened out, we came very close to buying there.    Please pass on my regards to all and there is a bed here for anyone who wishes to visit.

    Kind Regards,

  Chris Semmens
