President' Message

  Jenk's Jottings

I enjoyed Dave Gillies talk last Tuesday. There are so many things one finds out during such presentations.

It was great to meet our new exchange student Marjorie from France.  We really should record her first appearance before the club and then compare her final presentation.

We will hear from Pat the latest news on the long awaited Yellow Boat arrival.

I am pleased to report that Bonnie Wake a Year 11 High School student has been accepted to represent District 9500 at the National Youth Science Forum in Perth 10/1/12 – 21/1/12 with 6 other students.  It is a great achievement just to be picked and pass the interview process.  There is a cost of $2,300 and the Board will discuss the extent of our sponsorship very soon.  I personally favour our emphasis on Youth activities and will confirm further details in due course.

We are honoured by the visit of our District Governor Eric Russell who will speak to the club at this meeting.  He is quite inspirational and will have lots to tell us I am sure.  Assistant District Governor Tim Clements will also be visiting our club again and we will be pleased to make them both welcome.

They will both meet with the Board at lunchtime prior to our evening meeting.

Tonight’s meeting will be our first ladies night for the year and I look forward to the ladies presence which will brighten up the evening.

Noel

Youth Exchange

Hi everybody

I have soon been home for a month. Its really good to be back, and i have been really busy seeing friends and family. I’m starting school (yr 10) the 10th of August, which i’m actually looking forward to. :-)

Adrian and Margie came to Denmark and stayed for 5 days. It was really nice to have Australians around again. :-)

I showed them my city and they met my family and friends. I really enjoyed spending time with them. It felt good that my parents met someone from my life in Australia, maybe they will understand it a bit more of what it was like. But overall I was really glad they came. I had a really good time! So thank you.

It was really weird to come back. Only after a few days it seemed like I haven't been gone at all. That was the most scariest at all. But friends from Australia kept in contact and that felt really good. Everyone said they missed me, and I think that, and the fact that i kept busy all the time, made it a bit easier to get through. I really start miss everything now and its very hard, but that’s just a part of the experience, and when i get over it, I will be stronger :-)

I just wanna thank you my 4 host families and rotary. Thank you so much for helping me all through the year, for showing me you life - letting me into your families and for caring. It couldn’t have been the best year of my life if it was not for you!

I will never forget any of you! and i hope we'll meet sometime in the near future. You are more than welcome anytime here in Denmark. I will try to make it back as soon as possible.

Love Olivia

Youth Exchange continued

Everything is going great with me at the moment. Life is pretty busy - I understand how you feel, it is very easy to get caught up in it all! At the moment I am just in my school routine (hanging out for holidays a little). I am still struggling with understanding everything in school but my language skills are slowly improving. Chemistry in English is hard; in German it is almost impossible!

I am still in my first guest family (family Dege). They are a lovely family and I will stay there until after the Summer holidays (so I will stay in my other two guest families for about 2 1/2 months).

During the Easter holidays I went on a 'Deutschland Tour' with all the exchange students in my district which was fantastic. It was for two weeks and we mainly visited cities in Germany but we also went briefly to France, Belgium and Czech Republic. This weekend I am going to Paris for one night with all of the exchange students in the district as a present because we were sent one night home early on the Deutschland Tour. Long story short I think the Rotex people were just sick of 70 teenagers in one bus and so were sent home a day early with poor reasoning. So that is why Rotary have organised this little trip for us. Apart from that I haven't done a lot of travelling but I'm sure there will be opportunities in the summer holidays.

Viele Grüße,

Byron

"Follow the Yellow Boat Road"

We will have more information by Tuesday night but they have been held up by bad weather and are most likely to arrive on Friday the 12th and we plan to have a dinner (mixed) at Ravendale on Friday night to hear Rob Pennicott speak about his trip around Australia and we will be trying to get an idea of numbers on Tuesday night.

We have arranged marina berths thanks to Hamish, Adrian and the Sarin Group. I have organised a preliminary press release and David Johnston as publicity officer is forewarning the local media.

At Tuesday's meeting I will ask for volunteers to take billets for overnight . Probably 7 as far as I can tell.

In the meantime if you wish you could access their website at:  http://follow.theyellowboatroad.com
